Accessibility Statement

Our commitment

English for Emergencies is built for adult English learners of all backgrounds and abilities, including learners with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive differences, and learners who are not yet literate in any language. We target conformance with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA.

What we support

• Full keyboard navigation across all lessons and games.
• Screen-reader labels on icon-only buttons and interactive controls.
• Right-to-left (RTL) layout for Arabic, Farsi, and Pashto, with fonts sized for legibility.
• Adjustable text size via the browser's built-in zoom (Ctrl/Cmd +) without breaking the layout.
• Color contrast that meets or exceeds AA thresholds for body text.
• Every vocabulary word, phrase, and instruction has audio — so learners who cannot read (in English or in their own language) can still use the site.
• Translations of definitions, instructions, and tips into 12+ languages, with native-voice audio playback.
• Large tap targets on mobile (44×44 px minimum for primary buttons).

Known limitations

• Recorded-voice playback quality varies by device and browser. If a recording won't play, try the built-in "Listen" button instead.
• AI-assisted translations are reviewed for common phrases but may occasionally miss idiom or nuance. Every lesson has a "Report a bad translation" link — please use it.
• Some third-party embeds (analytics, translate widget) may not be fully reachable by every assistive technology.

Report a barrier

If you hit a barrier — a broken control, missing label, unreadable text, missing translation, or anything else — please tell us. We treat accessibility issues as bugs and fix them.

Ongoing work

Accessibility is not a one-time project. We test the site with keyboard-only navigation and screen readers on each release, and we welcome outside audits.
